Distinguished and Famous people from The Wheatbelt

🌾 William Farrer

William Farrer conducted his best-known wheat experiments at Lambrigg on the Murrumbidgee, in country that later became part of the Australian Capital Territory. In his time it was New South Wales, and his work addressed problems confronting the colony's wheat growers. Crossbreeding sought better resistance to rust as well as grain suited to milling and baking. He became a Department of Agriculture wheat experimentalist in 1898. His connection to the NSW grain-growing story is agricultural research rather than a claim that every place he lived belonged within a single, fixed wheatbelt boundary.

📜 Dorothea Mackellar

Dorothea Mackellar was born in Sydney but drew inspiration from time on family farms near Gunnedah, in the north-western grain-growing country. Her best-known poem, My Country, was written while she was in England and first published in 1908. The contrast between distance and remembered Australian landscapes helped give the work its force. She also wrote novels and took part in literary organisations. The Gunnedah association is a recurring family and creative connection, rather than a local birthplace, linking one of Australia's most familiar poems with country she knew through experience.

📖 Dal Stivens

Dal Stivens grew up at West Wyalong and attended the public school before further education in Sydney. Born at Blayney in 1911, he began working in a bank when the Depression put university beyond reach. His first short-story collection appeared in 1936, and journalism, fiction and government information work followed. His subjects included sport, literature and natural history. The West Wyalong childhood places him within the human history of NSW's grain-growing towns, while his professional writing developed in metropolitan and wartime settings beyond the district.
